Older people are always telling stories about what the Old Canary Islands were like. They talk constantly about how things used to be before each island was divided into two zones.
Some of them actually lived through it; others know about it from what their parents told them. But they all start by saying that it wasn’t always like this.
The older people say that in the past, a single family used to live in a house. In ours there are three of us, as in almost all the homes in the residential zone.
Las personas mayores siempre cuentan historias de cómo era la Antigua Canarias. Hablan todo el tiempo de cómo era todo antes de que dividieran cada isla en las dos zonas.
Algunas llegaron a vivirlo, otras lo saben por lo que les contaron sus padres y sus madres. Pero todas empiezan diciendo que esto no siempre fue así.
Las personas mayores cuentan que antes en una casa residía una sola familia. En la nuestra somos tres, como en casi todas las viviendas de la zona residente.
I’d like to have my own house, but there are few habitable homes in the residential zone, they’re very expensive, and there are a lot of us.
Though I’m not complaining, there are houses shared by four or five families; that’s the minimum number needed to cover the rent.
There are weeks when I wish I’d be assigned to work in one of the villas—12 hours of fresh air and plenty of space; it’s better than nothing.
Me gustaría tener mi propia casa pero las viviendas habitables de la zona residente son pocas, muy caras y somos mucha población.
Aunque no me quejo, hay casas de cuatro o cinco familias, es lo mínimo que se necesita juntar para pagar un alquiler.

They say that in the past, people could live and move freely across the whole island, that there was no residential zone or large resort area.
They say the tourist areas have always existed. That hotels were built almost every year, and that people came from all over the world in search of luxurious and exclusive holiday experiences.
But above all, they say they came for the climate and the natural surroundings here.
Cuentan que antes la gente podía habitar y transitar por toda la isla, que no existían la zona residente y la gran zona resort.
Cuentan que siempre existieron las zonas turísticas. Que se construían hoteles casi cada año, y que venía gente de todo el mundo en busca de experiencias lujosas y exclusivas para sus vacaciones.
Pero sobre todo, cuentan que venían por el clima y la naturaleza que había aquí
They also recall the opening of the Great Resort Zone. A city comprising dozens of luxury mega-complexes and artificial beaches, it stretched across the territory of several former municipalities in the south of the island, and prohibited the local population from living there.
They say the idea delighted the rulers of the time, which is why the law was soon changed to allow the most privileged and wealthy locals to buy property and live there too.
The investment groups behind the Great Resort Zone, happily overwhelmed by their success, managed to secure approval for new terms, and within a few years the zone had expanded to cover 50% of the island.
The business was tremendously lucrative, so how could they not want to multiply it by eight?
Recuerdan también la inauguración de la Gran Zona Resort. Una ciudad formada por decenas de macro complejos de lujo y playas artificiales, que abarcaba la extensión de algunos antiguos municipios del sur de la isla, y que prohibió la residencia a la población autóctona de allí.
Dicen que la idea encantó a los gobernantes de la época y por eso al poco tiempo la ley cambió para que la gente autóctona más privilegiada y de gran capacidad económica pudiera comprar y residir también en su interior.
Los grupos inversores de la Gran Zona Resort, felizmente desbordados por el éxito, lograron que se les aprobaran nuevas condiciones y en pocos años la zona se expandió hasta ocupar el 50% de la isla.
El negocio fue tremendamente lucrativo, así que ¿Cómo no iban a querer multiplicarlo por ocho?
In less than 20 years, the rest of the islands were already operating under the same system.
En menos de 20 años el resto de las Islas funcionaba ya bajo el mismo sistema.
They say that the haze wasn’t permanent back then. That it would come several times a year for three or four days and then clear away.
Back then, the giant turbines of the Great Resort Zone didn’t exist—the ones that clean their air and push the haze and its pollution all the way over here.
The same thing happens in the sea. I remember the great crisis of the Great Resort Zone because it happened when I was a child.
The sea could no longer cope with the pollution, and the filth on the beaches led to a drop in visitor numbers.
They worked for two years until they had modified all the island’s outfalls so that they discharged into the Residential Zone.
Cuentan que antes la calima no era permanente. Que venía varias veces al año durante tres o cuatro días y después se quitaba.
Entonces no existían las turbinas gigantes de la Gran Zona Resort, que limpian su aire y nos empujan hasta aquí la calima y su contaminación.
Lo mismo pasa en el mar. Recuerdo la gran crisis de la Gran Zona Resort porque sucedió cuando yo era niño.
El mar no soportó más contaminación y la suciedad de las playas provocó una bajada en la ocupación.
Trabajaron durante dos años hasta que modificaron todos los emisarios de la isla para que desembocaran en la Zona Residente.
And to stop it being carried back by the currents, they deployed kilometres of floating barriers to keep the rubbish in our part of the island.
In the Resident Zone, everyone’s in work; the promise of full employment really did come true. And no wonder! There are huge numbers of tourists to look after. Hundreds of thousands arrive and leave every week.
Y para evitar que volviera con las corrientes, desplegaron kilómetros de barreras flotantes que retienen la mierda en nuestra zona de la isla.
En la Zona Residente todo el mundo trabaja, la promesa del pleno empleo fue real. ¡Y cómo no! Hay una gran cantidad de turistas que atender. Cada semana se van y llegan cientos de miles.
I’m almost always assigned to the big skyscraper hotels, but more than once I’ve been sent to private villas and get a close-up view of a beach.
You never know your rota until you get on the bus and they hand you the slip.
But first you have to go through the Güimar tunnel checkpoint, where they check our temporary accreditation and work permits so we can enter the large resort area.
What I find hardest to cope with is always the water restrictions. They say that in the past you could turn on the tap whenever you wanted: any day, at any time.
A mí casi siempre me toca servir en los grandes hoteles rascacielos, pero más de una vez me tocan las villas privadas y veo de cerca alguna playa.
Nunca sabes tu planning hasta que subes a la guagua y te dan la papeleta.
Pero primero se debe pasar el control de los túneles de Güimar, donde revisan nuestra acreditación temporal y permiso de trabajo para poder entrar en la gran zona resort.
Lo que peor llevo siempre es la ley del agua. Cuentan que antes se podía abrir el grifo siempre que se quisiera: cualquier día y a cualquier hora.
They say the first crisis they can remember was in Old Fuerteventura in the early 2000s.
That was the first time they decided to cut off the water supply to the local residents to leave the entire flow for the tourist areas.
This month, my sector has been allocated shower time on Tuesdays. Sometimes, in my 6 minutes, I don’t have time to wash off all the dust.
Well… if I even get that, because if it coincides with the golf course watering schedule in the large resort area, barely a trickle comes out and there’s no pressure.

Que ahí fue la primera vez que se decidió cerrar el grifo a la población residente para dejarle todo el caudal a las zonas turísticas.
Este mes a mi sector nos toca tiempo de ducha los martes. Hay veces que en mis 6 minutos no me da tiempo a quitarme toda la calima.
Bueno... si es que los tengo, porque si coincide con el horario de riego a los campos de golf de la gran zona resort apenas sale un fisquito y sin presión.
Sometimes, if there’s no guest in the room, I turn on the tap and wash my face, then dry everything thoroughly so there’s no trace left – otherwise I might get in trouble.
But hey, it’s always better than having to go down to the cliffs in the residential area. I’d rather smell of sweat than of sewage.
That, and I don’t want to risk dying from an E. coli infection.
A veces si no está el cliente en las habitaciones abro el grifo y me lavo la cara, luego lo seco todo bien para que no quede rastro o podrían sancionarme.
Pero bueno siempre es mejor que tener que bajar a los riscos de la zona residente. Prefiero oler a sudor que a de emisario.

One of my favourite times of the year is summer. It’s peak season and the underwater hotel is always short of staff.
The rooms have windows overlooking the ocean. When I finish my shift, I come up to the surface in the lift and watch the fish.
My grandmother used to tell me that the stretch of sea between Old Tenerife and Old Gomera was open!
That the huge Loro Tanque Marine Aquarium didn’t exist, and that the whole area was home to marine life in the wild.
I know these are cloned in a lab, but I can’t help imagining they’re real, like the ones in the old documentaries I watch online.
Una de mis épocas favoritas del año es la de verano. Es temporada alta y siempre se necesita personal en el hotel submarino.
Las habitaciones tienen cristaleras con vistas al océano. Cuando acabo la jornada subo a la superficie en el ascensor y veo los peces.
Mi abuela me contaba que la franja de mar entre Antigua Tenerife y Antigua Gomera ¡estaba abierta!
Que el gran acuario Marino del Loro Tanque no existía, y toda esa zona albergaba vida marina en libertad.
Ya sé que estos son clonados en laboratorio pero no puedo dejar de imaginar que son reales como los de los antiguos documentales que veo en internet.
Today was my last day of the shift. Every six months, ‘The Change’ happens, and those of us who were serving in the Grand Resort Zone move to the crops in the Resident Zone, and vice versa.
Personally, I prefer this time of year as a farmer. It’s physically very hard work, but I don’t have to put up with the people from the Grand Resort Zone.
Hoy fue mi último día del turno. Cada seis meses sucede "El Cambio", y la gente que estuvimos sirviendo en la Gran Zona Resort pasamos a los cultivos en la Zona Residente, y viceversa.
Personalmente prefiero la época del año como agricultor. Es muy duro físicamente, pero no tengo que aguantar a la gente de la Gran Zona Resort.
What’s more, I’d rather not have to rely on tips to make up my wages. Older people always say that the whole thing is a great irony, because in their day, people who spoke out against the over-exploitation of tourism were asked:
‘And what are we islanders supposed to live on then? Growing potatoes and bananas?’ Yes, what a great irony.
Y además prefiero no depender de sus propinas para completar mi sueldo. Las personas mayores siempre dicen que todo esto es una gran ironía, porque en sus tiempos a la gente que discutía la sobreexplotación turística le decían:
¿Y de qué vamos a vivir entonces la gente de las islas? ¿De cultivar papas y plátanos? Sí, qué gran ironía.

Cuando la ficción no se distingue tanto de la realidad...
"El Típico de Tenerife" es un artista Tinerfeño que lleva años construyendo un espacio en la red donde apoyar a Canarias desde sus ilustraciones, divulgando y compartiendo con una mezcla de humor y seriedad que me encanta. Hace poco me atreví a ofrecerle este proyecto, sólo para tener su permiso para hacerlo yo por mi cuenta... ¡Cuál fue mi sorpresa al ver que este loco playa se apuntaba hasta con animaciones hechas por él! Se nos fue el baifo totalmente.
Les presentamos así la versión animada de su webcómic distópico "Canarias: Año 2093", un cómic que explora lo que quizás pudiera pasarle al archipiélago si el turismo y el sistema en el que vivimos sigue como está...
Y este vídeo no sería lo mismo, desde luego, sin la maravillosísima voz de Lamberto Guerra, el Constantino Romero Canario, un talentoso actor con mucho rodaje ( literalmente ) que nos presta su garganta para ser la voz de "El Típico". Dicho directamente de su boca: "Soy de Gran Canaria (Las Palmas de), pero vivo y estoy enamorado de La Laguna (San Cristóbal de), así que puntúo doble".
Celebramos así no solamente el arte y el talento local, sino el Día de Canarias. Este es mi homenaje al archipiélago, hoy, 30 de Mayo del 2024, con la vista y la esperanza puesta en el mañana.

¿Cuándo recibirá Cuna del Alma a sus primeros huéspedes?
Apertura prevista en 2028.
¿Qué significa Cuna del Alma?
Este nuevo proyecto pretende convertirse en un referente de un nuevo modelo turístico en las Islas Canarias, no sólo arquitectónico sino también en la forma de gestionarlo.
Situado en el Puertito de Adeje, en la costa suroeste de Tenerife, es una propuesta alojativa enfocada a una nueva generación de turismo exigente y propietarios de segunda residencia que buscan el confort, que quieren huir de la masificación, pero que también se sienten responsables, tanto ecológica como socialmente.
¿Qué se va a construir?
Cuna del Alma incluye apartamentos de playa de poca altura, pequeñas casas y villas, de 1 a 3 dormitorios. Todos han sido concebidos desde una perspectiva de respeto al medio ambiente y de integración en el paisaje.
El terreno total tiene una superficie de 500.000 metros cuadrados, pero el proyecto Cuna del Alma en sí sólo ocupa un tercio de esta superficie. Esto significa que hay mucha naturaleza y espacios abiertos.
El proyecto está situado junto a una reserva natural, pero en ningún caso el proyecto afectará a esta zona.
¿Quiénes han iniciado el proyecto?
El proyecto es una iniciativa tomada por diferentes inversores, entre ellos dos familias belgas, que ya tienen una larga experiencia en la creación de hoteles y complejos turísticos de alto standard en la isla. Se sienten personalmente muy vinculados a la isla. Sin embargo, todo el proyecto es ejecutado por un equipo local español. Esto nos permite mantener un estrecho contacto con la comunidad local de Tenerife.
